Concrete or wood: it depends what you want to learn

The surface under your wheels changes what you practise, not just how it feels.

Concrete is unforgiving and consistent. It does not flex, it does not develop soft patches, and it tells you immediately when your weight is in the wrong place. A concrete bowl skated for twenty years rides almost exactly as it did when it cured, which is why old parks stay busy.

Wood is kinder and less honest. A plywood ramp gives a little under load, which flatters a bad landing and hides a sloppy weight shift. That forgiveness is genuinely useful when you are learning something that involves falling repeatedly, and it is why almost every indoor park is built from sheet goods.

The practical difference shows up in wheels. On concrete a harder wheel rolls faster and slides predictably. On wood a harder wheel chatters over screw heads and seams, and most people end up a few points softer than they expected.

If you skate both, keep two sets of wheels and swap them. It sounds fussy. It takes four minutes and it will do more for your week than a new deck.
